Start underneath, not on top
Start with the appearance and practical use you want, then check which construction can support them. A suitable existing base may be retained; movement, cracks, levels or drainage problems can require remedial work or reconstruction. Assessment explains the recommendation rather than assuming a new finish will resolve what is underneath.
Photographs help us understand your priorities. A site assessment checks the levels, edges, drainage and existing construction before the final recommendation.
Resin bound
- Natural aggregate bound with resin gives a continuous finish. Regular cleaning is still needed because seeds can establish in accumulated dirt.
- Water can pass through the resin layer; the full construction, ground and drainage route determine whether the system is permeable.
- Colour is chosen from physical samples held against your property, in daylight, before anything is ordered.
- Edge restraint and interfaces need to suit the specified resin system.
- Best kept off heavy point loads and not used as a storage yard.
Block paving
- Individual blocks on a laying course. Permeable paving requires a specified system; ordinary joints alone do not establish permeability.
- Patterns and borders give a more traditional look, and a block-paved border can be used to frame a resin area.
- Joints need care using the material specified for the system, which differs between conventional and permeable paving.
- Can be lifted and re-laid if something needs to go underneath later.
Tarmac and asphalt
- Asphalt can suit both domestic and larger access areas. The laying method depends on the site, access and specification.
- The construction needs suitable support, edge restraints and drainage. Joints and transitions are detailed where required.
- Discuss fuel exposure, point loads and other use requirements when choosing the surface.
How we help you decide
At your assessment we measure, check the existing surface and base, look at the levels and show you samples on the actual property. You then get a written proposal naming the construction route, what is included and what is priced separately — so you can compare like for like.
